Existing Activities

A summary of the existing activities identified by ESA and the User Group in the GlobWave statement of work.

WorldWideStatistics is a commercial product operated by Fugro OCEANOR.

World Wave Atlas 2.0 (WWA) is Fugro OCEANOR's global satellite Altimeter database and software package, sold commercially since 1994.

Given the complexity of satellite missions ESA has developed a quality control strategy, which involves the monitoring of particular elements of the mission which are considered critical to the process of quality control.

SOPRANO is a demonstration web site for SAR ocean L2 products developed by CLS-DAR and the wave outputs of SOPRANO will be integrated in the GlobWave L2 diagnostic dataset.

The CERSAT data centre hosts a database of collocated products via its web portal.

MAXWAVE is a European Union funded project which aims to investigate waves of extreme height or shape which cause accidents at sea e.g. loss of ships.

ENVIWAVE is an initiative to use data from the Altimeter (RA-2) and SAR (ASAR) instruments aboard the Envisat satellite in order to combine with numerical models of the ocean.

The Coordinate Approach to Markets for Marine Earth Observations (CAMMEO) project is part of ESA's Earth Observation Market Development Programme.

The Radar Altimetry Tutorial provides a user friendly outline of the radar Altimetry domain. It outlines the applications of Altimetry (e.g. atmosphere, ice, ocean, coastal, etc.) as well as providing real use cases regarding these applications such as ocean eddies in the Kuroshio current and seasonal variations in the gulf stream.

The Basic Envisat SAR Toolbox (BEST) and Basic Envisat Altimetry Toolbox (BRAT) are both collections of executable software tools designed especially for use with ESA SAR and Altimetry data respectively.

The SSALTO (Segment Sol multi-missions dALTimetrie, d'orbitographie et de localisation précise) multi-mission ground segment encompasses ground support facilities for the control of instruments on DORIS and POSEIDON, processing data from DORIS and the TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1 and Envisat-1 Altimeters, and for providing user services and expert Altimetry support.

The Global Altimeter Processing Scheme (GAPS) contains global data from the ERS-1, ERS-2 and TOPEX/Poseidon Altimeters.

SEPRISE (Sustained, Efficient Production of Required information Services) is a Specific Support Action funded by the EC within the 6th Framework Programme to further operational oceanographic services, in line with the priorities of the members of EuroGOOS.

POSEIDON is a planning tool aimed at the protection of the marine environment, supporting business activities as well as preventing disasters and saving lives in the Greek seas.

The Altimetry for COastal REgions or ALTICORE initiative was focused on improving the quality and availability of Altimeter data along and near the coasts of European seas and also aimed to investigate effective methods of reliable data exchange through dedicated web services and data management infrastructures.

The goal of ECOOP is to create an integrated system offering the ability to detect environmental and climate change and to improve forecasting of the behaviour of our European seas.

WorldWaves is a commercial product developed over many years by Fugro OCEANOR through a series of national, European research projects (including ESA funding) and in-house funding starting in the early 1990s with the aim to commercialise remotely sensed data.

ESPEN was a pilot project designed to provide wave measurements and forecasting information with specific applications to Hellenic navigation.

EUROWAVES is a prototype tool which can be used for the evaluation of wave conditions at any European coastal location.

The European Wave Energy Atlas is an initiative which uses model predictions and in situ measurements to characterise wave climate and wave energy statistics in European seas.

The Archimede project is an initiative promoted by APAT for the collation and standardisation of data on waves, sea levels, currents and meteorological measurements.

The Radar Altimeter Database System (RADS) is an initiative funded by the Dutch government to establish a harmonised, validated and cross-calibrated sea level database of satellite Altimeter data.

AVISO is an archive of Altimetry data from multiple missions including TOPEX/Poseidon, Jason-1, ERS-1, ERS-2 and Envisat, which allows a wealth of applications including ocean circulation, sea surface height mapping, ocean variability and spans domain areas from geophysics and climate modelling to the atmospheric and biological sciences.

The HR-DDS is an online, interactive archive and analysis tool for SST data.

The Wave Forecasting Verification Scheme (WFVS) was established at ECMWF in 1995, and allows participating centres to upload model predictions via ftp to ECMWF.
