The European Wave Energy Atlas is an initiative which uses model predictions and in situ measurements to characterise wave climate and wave energy statistics in European seas.

Specifically, WERATLAS is focused on offshore locations in the North-Eastern Atlantic Ocean and the North, Norwegian, Barents and Mediterranean Sea. This large area is divided into 5 smaller regions and consists of information recorded at 85 locations. Most of the information at these locations is predicted by the WAM model, operated by ECMWF, but in areas where the model predictions are questionable then in situ measurements are used in the form of buoy or platform measurements.

The development of WERATLAS was partially funded by the JOULE Programme - the European R&D Programme on Non-nuclear Energies.
