Measuring Global Sea State using SAR data

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) have recently published their work on Global Sea State Measurements using ENVISAT ASAR Wave Mode Data.

DLR iconDLRThis work focuses on developing an empirical algorithm, known as CWAVE, that derives integral ocean wave parameters from SAR data without first guess information. CWAVE derived total SWH measurements have been validated for both ERS and ENVISAT ASAR Wave Mode Data against both models and buoys, with a scatter index of 24% against buoys. ENVISAT ASAR CWAVE measurements have also been compared to Jason and GFOAltimeter measurements with a scatter index of 13% and 17% respectively.
