Overview
The GlobWave online tool is intended to provide users with some user-friendly means to investigate the content and extent of the various data collected or produced by GlobWave project to assess the quality and accuracy of the satellite measurements, as well as displaying or comparing other potiential sources of wave measurements.
At this stage, it provides access to :
- in situ buoy data collected from multiple public sources. Access to restricted sources is also permitted to authorized users upon login. Visualisation of public data does not require login. The interface allows to select the relevant buoys with respect to various criteria :
- date
- distance to the shore or depth
- source (based on network or buoy identifier)
- type of sensor/measurement
- matchups between satellite and moored buoys. The same selection criteria as above can be used.
- wave model outputs
Main features
Online help will be soon available within the tool but here is a glance at the currently available functions.
The tool allows to download and display the data through various plot functions :
![]() |
Time series Plots time series on or more variables from one or more source(s), such as buoy(s). Averaging over a user defined time step (defined as a multiple of hours, days or months) is possible, in which case standard deviation and sampling for each step can be displayed too in various ways. |
![]() |
Histograms Any scalar variable can be displayed as an histogram over a specific period of time, following a user defined histogram bin. |
![]() |
Directional histograms Any variable having a directional components (such as wind, wave or currents) can displayed as an histogram over a specific period of time, each slice following a user defined step is proportional to the number of samples and can be colored according to the mean value of a second user choosen variable. |
![]() |
Scatterplots two variable can be plotted as a classic X/Y graph or a binned scatterplot. The bin step can be user adjusted, each bin value being the bin density or the mean value of a third user-defined variable. |
![]() |
Time/Frequency plots Variables sampled in frequency band (such as wave spectra) can be displayed over time, allowing for instance to assess wave propagation properties such as the relationship of the swell train propagation on the wave length. |
